Is There Still School Spirit in the Midst of a Pandemic?

The answer to this question is short, but certainly not simple. Yes, there is still school spirit in the midst of a pandemic, but it doesn’t look like anything we’ve seen before. After many events like Battle of the Classes, Homecoming, and assemblies were canceled due to the coronavirus, school spirit lessened. Even football games and other sporting events had to be reorganized, leaving little hope for a somewhat normal school year. Luckily, after-school clubs like Student Council are constantly coming up with new ways to bring back school spirit and provide an escape from the stress that comes with learning online. One of the most recent events Student Council has planned is a spirit week. Whether students and teachers are at home or in school, one way they can show their Boro Pride is by wearing any Freehold High School apparel on Friday, January 15th.

Besides for Student Council, many other extracurricular activities have provided a sense of community and regularity. Almost any club or team students participate in contribute to the feeling of school spirit. Although no clubs can meet in person, and very few spectators are allowed at sporting events, being with other students (online or in person) where there are no requirements to meet is relieving. Not having to worry about the grade you will receive at the end of the day encourages students to speak up and participate, which leads to an increase in school spirit.

Since we don’t know what the future holds, the school spirit that comes as a result of clubs and activities is crucial. This school spirit, despite being different than the spirit from last year, is what is holding Freehold High School together. The enthusiasm from parents, teachers, students, and staff is what will help get our school through the pandemic.
