What’s Trending on TikTok?
*Note: This article is written by a teenager who does not condone certain trends*
TikTok is an app that almost every teen owns and loves. TikTok creators have the influence to popularize certain dances, games, and anything trending in media or entertainment.
Here are a few trends that have been swarming around in almost anyone’s “For You” Page:
- Renegade– Jalaiah Harmon created the Renegade dance to K Camp’s song, “Lottery (Renegade)” in 2019, Soon after, Charli D’amelio, a creator with over 100 million followers, swooped in and did the dance, earning her an abundance of followers, likes, and views. The trend has become a classic on TikTok as teenagers are often seen doing the dance in schools, at home, and more.
- Ta-daa!- Khabane Lame is known for teaching viewers the “right way of doing something.” After watching someone do something incorrectly or ridiculously, Lame would correct the action, then stick his hands out as if he’s saying “Ta-daa!” to emphasize the simplicity of it.
- Devious Licks– At the beginning of the school year, students following the trend would film themselves stealing items from school, most commonly soap or paper towels from bathrooms. “Devious Licks” then escalated to extreme acts such as stealing/vandalizing bathroom stalls or even a teacher’s car door. Some schools have suspended, expelled, or had students arrested for doing this trend. Since then, TikTok has banned the trend and schools had students return their stolen items.
- Dom Toretto– If a person says “family,” their face would turn into Fast & Furious’ Dominic Toretto with “Bandoleros” playing in the background. The trend has then become shenanigans, and gone viral with verified creators participating in it.
- Squid Game- The South Korean drama has dramatically risen in popularity on Netflix. The show is about heavily indebted contestants playing a series of children’s games to win a large cash prize with their lives on the line. One contest that the players participate in is picking out a stamped shape on dalgona candy, which TikTok users are replicating. Users are also participating in “Red Light, Green Light,” but with non-deadly consequences as in the show.
TikTok is a popular app– well-known for its trends and influence on younger generations. Trends are what popularized the app and its creators. Although some trends can go too far, the company attempts to prevent or promote dangerous trends by providing caution.
Many young people enjoy hopping on the “trend train,” but, sometimes, it can be too early or too late. It is crazy how trends on TikTok can lead to massive followings or blow-ups of what used to be “underrated”. The ones listed above are a few that have exponentially climbed their way on your “For You” Page.
