March 30th marked a big day for MLB fans all over the country. It was the first day of the 2023 season. It was a particularly big day for the New York Yankees with the return of their new captain Aaron Judge and promising new starters such as Anthony Volpe. Yankee fans all over the stadium had signs up supporting their new captain. And Volpe gained so much attention that Yankee fans even dubbed opening day Volpening day. Both their praises turned out to be well deserved. The Yankees took a 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Gerrit Cole started the game for the Yankees. Cole pitched a shutout game and broke the Yankee record for the most strikeouts for a pitcher on opening day. He obtained eleven strikeouts. Judge also got his first-ever home run on opening day—a fitting feat for the reigning American League MVP and American League home run record holder. Gleyber Torres also hit a two-run home run for the Yankees. Volpe did not waste his time to show off his talents. He immediately stole second base the first time he got on base to show the fans his speed.

All in all, the team had a very successful opening day. Everyone contributed, and everyone proved to the fans what they could do. Yankee fans hope this success will continue throughout the season and lead to a World Series title.
