Many high school seniors are making the big decision just around this time; Where will you go to college? While some students have had a dream school in mind for years, others are more open to exploring different universities. While academics are overall the most important factor to consider when choosing a college, many other factors greatly impact your next four years. Some factors you should keep in mind when deciding the college for you are:
- Housing: Housing is a critical factor in your college experience because it determines where you will be living. It is important to consider if you will do well with a roommate, or it you are more fit for a single room. Also, does your school have communal bathrooms or private bathrooms, and if so, are you comfortable with that? These factors all add up to be a huge part of your college experience.
- Food: Given food is a necessity, it is important to ensure that your college has food that you will be comfortable and happy to eat, and that the food is actually good! It is also good to think about how many dining halls there are on campus and how far they would be from your dorm. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, it is important to note if there will be safe foods for you to eat at your college.
- Finances: The cost of a college education is often the most daunting and important part of making a college decision. It is important that the college you choose can fit your financial situation so you are not burdened with excess student loan debt. Many colleges offer many scholarships and financial relief, however, others are not so giving. It’s important to consider whether your college will be a smart financial fit for you, especially since student loan debt can burden you for years.
- Location: Where a college actually is, makes a big difference. You must consider how you would be transported to and from your college. Would you fly, take the train, drive, and if so, can you afford these options? It is also a good idea to consider if your college is in an area you could possibly see living in after you graduate, and if so, does your field of study have a lot of work in that area?
Choosing where you will pursue your higher education is clearly more than just where you will get your best education. While that is the main objective of higher education, it is important to consider other factors to ensure that your overall college experience is positive. Good luck to any seniors deciding on colleges, and remember to use the previous points to help guide your decision!
