[Freehold, NJ, 02/19/25] REVIEW:
The movie WICKED was released on November 22, 2024. Quickly, its popularity grew as new details kept surfacing, including the cast for the movie. Singer and songwriter, pop icon, Ariana Grande, played a lead role in the movie, posing as Glinda the Good Witch. Similarly, Cynthia Erivo, British singer, songwriter, producer, and actress played the lead role of Elphaba in WICKED. Many fans came together and anticipated the release of the movie, wondering if it would be the same as the broadway musical performed by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth–who also made appearances in the movie–. When the film was released, it was immediately a huge success. Movie theaters were filled and social media was trending with thousands of posts about the “New Wicked Movie.”
The list goes on, but some fans were disappointed with the outcome. In an IMDb WICKED “user review”, someone wrote, “There were moments in the film where it felt rushed, and times that seemed to drag. Toward the final act, I loathed the idea of hearing another song. The plot seemed increasingly thin and unable to hold my attention.” The movie ended up lasting for over three hours, and many fans couldn’t bear the on-going film anymore. Via google reviews, Mr. Gavinmccolgan writes, “First, let’s talk about the runtime. At over two and a half hours, the movie feels like it’s constantly dragging its feet.”
Fans were also upset at the thought that this was only part one of WICKED. As stated, “I did, however, like the green train and am pleased this was a Part 1 because it means I can miss Part 2 with joy in my heart.” Many were unhappy that the movie missed multiple details that the musical included, saying it diminished the idea of the original storyline and only focused on certain details, and are most likely not going to watch part two.
To sum everything up, WICKED was a hit in the industry; the music was immaculate, the cast was spectacular, and the storyline was fantastic. However, fans were disappointed with how everything was executed, as many felt that the storyline was rushed and the length of the movie was too long. WICKED was a wickedly good movie, and even though some fans were upset, the majority enjoyed the film and cannot wait until the next part comes out.
