“Senioritis” refers to the decline in motivation and effort in school work or just work in general, usually during Senior year. It often equates to tardiness, absences, and lower grades as seniors get ready for the end of their academic journey.
When I first heard about how Seniors get “senioritis”, I didn’t really want to believe it. More so, I thought I would never fall into that cycle. But after finishing most of my senior year already, I’ve seen firsthand how it slowly takes hold of students and classmates. Even if you don’t want it to happen, it does get to you. People are bound to be burnt out after constantly working, especially after taking big course loads.
You’ve worked hard for four years, and you feel like you deserve that break! And especially since you already got into the college you want to go to or know where you’re going to go, there really is no point in trying SO hard. That’s what their mindset is.
But when you let that mindset take control, that’s when people actually get “senioritis”. So here are some tips for students who want to avoid “senioritis” as much as possible:
(Note: “Senioritis,” whether it happens or not, all depends on what you do. But just know that it’s okay to take a break and relax!)
- Don’t skip or come in late to school at the beginning of the year. (If you start this habit, it will progressively get worse. Save all these absences for the end of the year – where the weather is actually nice out!)
- Don’t wait until the last minute to study or do your homework! It’s gonna pile up, and your grades will slip.
- Remember the consequences of “senioritis”. You’ve kept your grades up for so long, keep it up! (Also, understand that some colleges do rescind their offers if you slack off too much.)
- Go out with your friends! Make plans! (Convince each other to go to school together)
- Pour your focus into something in your school or community! (Maybe start a club?)
- And most importantly, enjoy your last moments of high school! Before you know it, you’ll be out of here- and who knows? You might end up missing it!
